Mmmm ok.  The updated curses does do a lot of little mallocs when it
starts up which may be impacting you.  I have a fix for this that
decreases the number of mallocs at the expense of slightly more memory
usage (well, maybe, since the mallocs size is rounded up anyway so the
impact may be less).  I halved the sys time used by vi loading with
this fix.
