I am saying that vi is slower than I recall.  It used to start up
relatively instantaneously; it now takes 1s on my IPX to run 'vi' with
no args.  'jove' with no args takes half that, and vi doesn't handle large
files very efficiently (vi /usr/share/misc/termcap took 12 seconds to load,
with jove it took two).  Okay, so there is a difference.

Also, yes, the 'file' command is slow again.  mycroft, what was the fix?
Isn't there a malloc.conf file in /etc that's supposed to do something?
