I must be missing something here.   Besides the fact that it is indeed
inherently bad security to log in directly as root (this need not turn
into a security thread folks), why is it so much beyond people's means
to simply edit root's .login and/or .profile to remove the message?

It seems to me that people's energies are better spent customising the
files that were intended to be customised to their level of sophistication
rather than imposing change on the entire world in a distribution.
