I got one of these gizmos last week form Toshiba, but haven't played with
it yet. When I got it, I was told to better use the external AC ov erthe
powering via PCMCIA as the performance would suck. maybe that's what
you're experiencing here - try external powering of the DVD drive.

(BTW the drive i have here can be connected not only via the cable you
describe, but also via other cables to the parallel and usb port.)
