In my case, both ends of the PPP link are handled by NetBSD (1.4.1+ and
1.3.3, in this case).  The link may lock up at any time - under heavy use
or while being virtually idle.

I can't see what's happening at the other (1.3.3) end, but at this end
no data gets sent to the modem and no data is received from the remote
system (the modem LEDs don't blink).  Maybe it's just the modems locking
up, don't know.
