May I humbly remind the fact that the above mentioned condition still exists in today's
-current.

This machine uses the esp driver which does not use ncr.c, cf.

esp0 at obio0 (quick): address 0x8b0000: NCR53C96, 16MHz, SCSI ID 7
scsibus0 at esp0: 8 targets, 8 luns per target
sd0 at scsibus0 targ 0 lun 0: <QUANTUM, FIREBALL_TM3200S, 300X> SCSI2 0/direct fixed
sd0: 3067 MB, 6810 cyl, 5 head, 184 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 6281856 sectors
cd0 at scsibus0 targ 3 lun 0: <SONY, CD-ROM CDU-8003A, 1.9a> SCSI2 5/cdrom removable

After the SCSI updates about the turn of the month, several changes were committed to
the ncr driver (in particular to ncr.c), but this does not help on this machine. Maybe
some of these changes are relevant to the esp driver as well...
