Fundamentally, in order to adhere to the principle of least surprise,
it is necessary that it not be possible to configure the meaning of
the delete/backspace key, and that all applications agree on its
meaning.   If we accept that configurability is good, then there is no
way to avoid violating the principle of least surprise for at least
some people, some of the time.
