ftp has started acting up, emitting frequent messages of 
"return code must be 229".

Here is a cut-n-paste of an ftp to ftp.cdrom.com to get the latest lesstif.
The "get" line as typed was "get les<tab>"  at that point ftp emitted
the 229 error.

Is this a case of our ftp changing or the remote ftpd's getting more
picky???
