That was the first thing I tried when I first ran across this -- since it 
didn't work, I thought it must be something else.

Are the speeds set once the card boots and probes the interface? From what 
I can understand of the code, the driver does auto-probe the media type if 
possible, but in this case it might be mis-identifying the port.
