I thought it had worked, but I see I was fooled somehow...

The necessary bindings seem to be there in both vi mode and emacs mode.

^X = prefix-2

^[[ = prefix-2
^XA = up-history
^XB = down-history
^XC = forward-char
^XD = backward-char
 
Note though that there seems to be a new release under development.  I'm
just about to check to see if it "fixes" this problem now....
