just off the top of your head(s), how ludicrous would it be to add the
current days date to the version string so that one could easily tell
the vintage of the kernel?  or is that as silly as 

	nt4 + sp4 == secure

???

the reason i ask is that sup'ed sources are midly different from
ftp'ed sources, which are subtly different from ftp'ed tar balls.
