Anyone using a gps (or other) clock connected to a serial port ?

I have /dev/gps symlinked to /dev/tty00 and xntpd fails to open the serial
port:

ioctl(TIOCSCTTY, 0) fails for clock I/O:
Operation not permitted
ioctl(TIOCSCTTY, 0) fails for clock I/O:
Operation not permitted

snip from output of xntpd -d -d -d

getnetnum given 127.127.5.1, got 127.127.5.1 (7f7f0501)
peer_config: addr 127.127.5.1 mode 3 version 3 minpoll 6 maxpoll 10 flags
0 ttl 0 key 0
refclock_open: fd 8 modem status 67
refclock_ioctl: fd 8 flags 0

fails both as type 4 or type 5 reference clock, have not tried them all.
