Maybe this is mouse related. I noticed some renaming of mouse devices
and had to do something myself (don't remember, MAKEDEV and little
changes in XF86config perhaps) to keep X mouse-happy.

There's an option ("-allowMouseOpenFail") to make the X-Server start
even if it doesn't find a working mouse. Hopefully this and xdm's
"-error" option (if you use xdm) help you to find out.
