Yes.

i.root-servers.net runs NetBSD with BIND v8 and so has for more than 6
months. V8 runs quite OK, and definitely better than v4. The .com zone
is a pain, though ... ;-)

Switching from v4 to v8 should be pretty painless. The named.boot
changes to named.conf, and there's a perl script in the BIND source
that will convert your named.boot to a corresponding named.conf. The
database files don't change at all with 8.1.2. There's a
_really_minor_ addition needed due to straightened out formalities
(see $TTL in the doc) to supress a warning message in BIND 8.2 that is
in beta currently.

So don't hesitate! Jump! :-)

(Today I just listened to Paul Vixie giving presentation on BIND at
the Stockholm USENIX. His message is also "Upgrade!" :-)
