Well, the problem here is that you try to open the device with no media in
it. So scsipi_start will not work (the messages you're seeing).
Doesn't happens with SCSI changer because, usually the changer
is at another LUN, so one doesn't have to open the cd devive to load the
drive.

I think the driver (and st and sd as well, probably) should be changed
to allow opening of the raw partition even if there's no media in the
drive. This would also allow xmcd to close the door :)
