i've noticed this problem several times in the past few years.  my
/var which never got more than ~40% full, and never more than about
5% inodes used to switch between TIME & SPACE, quite regularly...
i've since reinstalled that machine, and i haven't seen the problem
since...


but, AFAIK, there is definately a problem here somewhere..
