As I have never actally tried VMailer (since it is not publically
available yet), I can't really comment on that. However, the
website claims that VMailer can be up to three times as fast as qmail
(in some circumstances).

Did I understand you correctly that you actually were able to try out
VMailer? 

Anyway, even if VMailer is "only" as fast as sendmail, it is
supposedly more secure, and doesn't have sendmail's licensing issues,
so it might still be an improvement over sendmail.
