Just for kicks (I'm actually waiting for some PGCC patches to EGCS 1.0.2),
I built EGCS 1.0.2 last night on NetBSD/i386 -current (from March 15 sources)
and it seemed to build fine here. At least, it didn't give the error that
you have, and pretended to 'make && make install' just fine. ;-)

I configured with "./configure --prefix=/software/egcs-1.0.2 --enable-haifa",
and had the CC variable unset, and used the default NetBSD make (not gmake).
