Here we are setting up an 8 port boca NetBSD-1.3_BETA box here
so we have com0-9 configured. Trouble is, direct tty login
doesnt work.. hmm

What happens is you get the Password: prompt and then nothing.
The receiving end is stuck in read() but never sees any characters
and eventually times out.

A ps ax typically reveals:
login -p -- foo
So, we get as far as the getch loop in getpass.c

Im told that this has worked fine up till 1.3
