  No, that isn't precisely it.  
  
  My kernel, dmesg out put below, locks when I ifconfig de0 and de1.
  Neither my kernel, nor the GENERIC one from
	ftp.de.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.3_ALPHA/i386/tarfiles 
  will boot consistently: it appears that if I -sa it, and respond
immediately to the "root device (default wd0a):" prompt, then it is
okay. If I wait, then it crashes. My suspicion is that the wait is for
a packet (irq) from de0/de1. 
  Suggestions? This machine is a network testing node. Packets flow
"through" it so that we can purposely munge them to test the end
nodes. Thus its three network cards. It is also therefore a machine
that I can move to 1.3 without upsetting anyone.
