The error text is confusing, what it really means is that you didn't set
the TERM environment variable so vi don't get a termcap entry.

Do this if you use /bin/sh:

export TERM=sun

Oh, and you need a mounted /usr partition for the sun entry in
/usr/share/misc/termcap*
