I had this problem a couple of months ago.  For me, it was having the
line:

xterm*geometry:           80x36

instead of

xterm*vt100*geometry:           80x36

The former sets all xterm-related windows to 80x36, which for menus is
80x36 pixels, not very useful ;-)
