I always make a symbolic link /usr/X11 --> /usr/X11R<major>.<minor>.
Then I make the default PATH include /usr/X11, not
/usr/X11R<major>.<minor>. I try to always use the former in scripts etc
as well. Most people/programs shouldn't need to know which version of
X is installed.
