If you are going to use Eric's build setup, you should use gnu make
and you won't have problems.

Personally I build SSLeay quite a bit on several archs,
so I have a BSD build tree for it. (I use BSD make for all my own projects
eg SSLrsh) It is a little work to build the .inc
files for each new release, but I prefer it.
