That sounds as though C9X does not support chars larger than 16 bits.
Is this true, or am I missing something?

What about int17_t?  Or are only a few of these defined?  (That would
seem to me to critically cripple their usefulness.)

Of course, this ain't comp.lang.c9x; I suppose I really ought to be
sending this straight to seebs....
