i think it might just be that sendmail is waiting for name service to
time out on each of the interfaces it finds.  ie, it looks up each
address, or so i believe.  i know that playing with the resolv.conf
configuration has fixed it for me in the past...

you also have to keep in mind that sendmail uses the resolver directly
instead of going through the get*by*(3) routines...

i'm sure that affects it somehow.  maybe it tries to be too robust?
