This is functionally equivalent to my proposal, and with an up to date man
page for rc.conf (which I actually think that we have :-)) and an empty
rc.conf, I'll just as happy with this proposal as with my own suggestion.
Today the problem is that you have to have a sufficiently recent rc.conf
file for rc and netstart to work correctly.
Thinking about it, I may even like Ted Lemons suggestion better than my
own :-)
There may, however, be a slight problem in Teds suggestion in fact that
rc.conf is used by both rc and by netstart.
