OK - I put options ipfilter in my kernel config, so now I am not using
the lkm version, so now I get

base# ipf -E
open device: Operation not supported by device
SIOCFRENB: Bad file descriptor
base# ls -l /dev/ipl  
crw-------  1 root  wheel   29,   0 Apr 20 19:26 /dev/ipl

?!?
