My machine generally responds to ident by running cat ident.txt which
just contains:  

0 , 0 : ERROR : UNKNOWN-ERROR

that keeps 99% of sendmail's and ftpd's happy.  Only once in the last
year or so, I've had to allow a pedantic server to talk to identd -
yuk. 

BTW, I think it would be better if NetBSD built sendmail with 

# define IDENTPROTO     0
