Assuming you talk about NetBSD/i386: yes, given that your kernel
config file defines COMPAT_NOMID. However, you should keep in
mind that this work for statically linked binaries (i.e. Netscape)
only, unless you have the appropriate BSDI shared libraries.

No. For information regarding the roots of today's BSD implementations,
section 0.1 of the *BSD FAQ or the figure on page 6 in the 4.4BSD demon
book should be good starting points. (386BSD != BSD/386)
