I usually put in a sleep() and then attach gdb to the child after
it forks.

It should also be possible to do this with a wait of some sort,
but I couldn't get that happening and I didn't care to spend much
time on it.

At any rate, this problem may be duplicable outside of cpio. It's
on my to-do list, but unfortunately with my workload what it is at
the moment, that  doesn't mean I'm going to get to it any time
soon. :-(
