In the process of getting a persistent slip link working, I have modified 
my local copy of slattach to write its pid to a file in /var/run.  (The 
code is mostly lifted from pppd.)  This makes setting up scripts to control
a slip link much simpler and more deterministic.  If anyone out there would
like to review the code for sanity and possibly submit the changes for
inclusion in the main source tree (or just use the thing themselves :)
