Yes, there should be command-line flags to control their behaviour.

The only elegant alternatives would be for w to exec() uptime; or to
make the guts of uptime be a generic library function(s).

I'm not sure which I like better!  ;-)

In all seriousness it would probably be a really nice idea to start
building a libutil.a or something similar where common code from /bin
and /usr/bin utilities, etc., could be accumulated.  In particular I
have in mind the SysVr4 libgen as prior art which seemed to vastly
reduce a large number of maintenance nightmares.
