There is no need to make this overly complex.  Having both the option of
specifying a command line flag (as in "grep -E") and the historical name
(as in "egrep", or in this case, "uugetty") should be perfectly acceptable
to all parties.  Precedent _should_ be a strong enough argument to allow
(as opposed to require) the latter if it doesn't create conflict with
other parts of the system.
