It's useful even for multiple-architecture folks, since you can
make /usr/obj a symlink pointing wherever you want. Compile up your
i386 source tree with /usr/obj -> /usr/obj.i386, and your sparc
with /usr/obj -> /usr/obj.sparc.

Of course, we could always make an obj.i386, obj.sparc, obj.sun3,
etc.  etc., but that gets a bit cluttered, and doesn't actually
add any real extra functionality.
