to be precise:

as far as i'm aware, _all_ ports "do the right things" for keeping the
message buffer around between boots if that's possible, though on some
hardware it's just not possible.

Some NetBSD/i386 machines preserve the message buffer across boots
(e.g. the one i'm typing on right now), but most do not.
