Well, I would assume the following problem is caused by an out of
date library, except that I had just finished typing:

    cd /usr/src/lib;make install;cd /usr/src/gnu/lib;make install

(although I admit to not putting it all on the same line 8-)  After typing:

    cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/groff;make

I got the following:
(I ran the errors through sort|uniq so as to mail less than 10
identical lines of the same error message...)
