Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried this.  The reply comes immediately.. no
hang of any kind.

BTW, the rlogin hang time is either 4..5 seconds or 9..11 seconds, depending
on my luck.  I didn't see any delays of 5...9 seconds when starting several
rlogins.  Maybe the delay is one or two timeouts of some kind?
