Well, see the NetBSD Mission statement or the NetBSD Foundation announcement
for some hints ...

Besides that, I fail to see that providing slick interfaces or "fool proof"
tools is incompatible with presenting the system as suitable for people
not afraid to "get dirty hands". The two issues are quite orthogonal.
