I've seen this.  NetBSD1.1-current/sparc does something very similar with an
8200.

It probably doesn't help that it's classified by the kernel as a "rogue" drive
and, as such, also doesn't have an entry with which to use "mt" (if I get time,
I'll generate one).

For anyone modifying the table, EXB-8200s are tape drive type 7, which means
you need to put placeholders in the other places...
