Notice that NeXT for Intel chips, will run only on a 486 or higher.  =
There was a mode added to the 486 that allows it to run with a reverse =
byte order (same byte order as the MC680xx).  This allowed NeXT to =
easily port to Intel.  So even though many people refer to NeXT for =
Intel as the i386 version, NeXT wont run on a i386. Thus a NeXT formated =
disk is a NeXT formated disk.=20

(It has been years since I reviewed the specifics on this subject, but =
this is basically what I remember reading)

Of course NetBSD is fairly good at ignoring the byte order issue, except =
when it comes to drives, where NeXT for i386 ;-) is awesome.  I can read =
DOS, Mac, Sun, NeXT (of course), cd9660, and probably more.

How ironic, an OS (NeXT) that was written specific to a byte order can =
read almost anything, where an OS (NetBSD) written to compile on =
anything can't read disks from other architectures compiled from the =
same code!

I'm sorry if this angers some people, but it's true, and is one area =
NetBSD is knocked hard on.  The Linux camp tries to read disks of every =
format, they even think they can read your mind!

Well I just want would be flamers to know, I am an avid NetBSD user.  I =
have 1 MS-DOS/Windows, 1 NeXTSTEP Intel, and 3 NetBSD machines, guess =
what I like?  I just want to read other disks types.

Are you sure that this an endian problem? MC680x0 (NeXT stations) and
SPARC CPUs use AFAIK the same byte order (at least the both use not the
same byte order as Intel x86 CPUs).
