I see this all the time. I have an ncr53c810 controller on i386, it
works fine with the toshiba xm3401-ta drive.
The "empty" arises because the scsi bus/device probe is too quick for
the drive to complete its reset. If the probe waited a while longer,
the drive would tell the controller about the mounted media.
