Not sure, but this definately does:

	# ftp ...
	ftp> get some_tar_image |"tar xpf -"

and obviously, so does:

	ftp> get some_tar_image.tar.gz |"tar zxpf -"

(even with older BSD 4.3 ftp clients, e.g. ultrix)
