I want to know whom this Statement is from ;:-)
In reality the sgtty interface _is_ broken, you can't even set the modes you
are supposed to be able to set (modem control comes to mind, at least)
I won'T complain if only lpd would use termios instead of sgtty. I would love
to see my LaserWriter working again. I even would like to contribute the
code-transition if there is noone else working on lpd right now...

->Any comments?  Should I send-pr this?

Yeah. As it stands now, even system commands mess up the terminal-flags.
