It is a ncurses bug.

Get ncurses-1.92d (ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu).  It isn't quite perfect, 
but it works pretty well on my -current system.  And in the future when 
you upgrade to a new ncurses version, keep the old working one around for 
awhile.  It seems like every other ncurses release breaks on NetBSD...
