The idea of having $status be an array of signed ints is not a bad idea.
It would probably require that an agreement be reached on how to pass
exit status and signal status back to the calling process.  I would
think that a negative  number could be used to represent the signal
and a positive number would signify abnormal voluntary termination.
(I'm not awake so forgive me if I'm being redundant on what already
exists or something...).  Also, all programs would have to be retro-
fitted (I've happened upon programs which have exited with a negative
status on failure).

Just my (0x3 & 0xff) worth...
