   I'd think that doing this to / while it's mounted is a *REALLY* bad
   idea...

I did, on both trinity and duality (i386 and hp300, respectively), and
it worked fine.  However, you should do it from single-user and reboot
immediately afterward; the MNT_RELOAD that is done automatically by
fsck(8) is not enough in the case where the format was updated (though
this could probably be fixed easily).
