linux kernels (wouldn't you guess?) have such a thing ... it's called PLIP. 
As I understand, it will work even if your parallel port only has 4 input
bits...but maybe it will use all 8 if they're available.  I suppose it comes
in pretty handy if your machine doesn't have an Ethernet card...and it's
*got* to be easier to set up than SLIP.

Somehow I doubt that using an unmodified "sl" pseudo-device on top of the
parallel port would be plug-compatible with PLIP, but ...
