I was aware of this option; I'd sooner fix my cables than use it :-).

Using it requires changing getty, uucp, tip, and any other program you
want to use to open a line without carrier, or have a kludge process
hanging around doing nothing and keeping the line open, since clocal
is reset when the device is closed.
