the problem is, a accounting-aware utility needs to do this,
otherwise the kernel will never close and reopen the accounting
file.

normally, this is done by the 'sa' utility, but that's
USL-proprietary, and i've looked but can't seem to find a free
version.


If one used newsyslog to rotate it, and never bothered to reboot
the machine or enable/disable accounting, it would *still* grow
to be gigantic, but it would be unlinked because newsyslog would
have deleted the original file, but a link would still have been
kept to it.
